Is It Any Wonder?

By AR - The Spanish Olympic basketballers have caused an international scandal by posing for group photos using their fingers to make their eyes look slanted. Get it? They're going to China for the Olympics Games. It was reported widely and condemned widely, and Andrew Bolt has been particularly critical of them.

But is it any wonder the Spanish teams are so feckless? Don't forget eight years ago nearly all of the gold medal-winning Spanish Paralympian basketball team weren't actually disabled.
But as with other sporting competitions, the Paralympics are open to cheating. At the Sydney games in 2000, the Spanish basketball team won gold in a competition for athletes with intellectual disabilities. Ten of the 12-man squad were later found to have no disabilities. As a result, the International Paralympic Committee suspended the category of "athletes with an intellectual disability" - a decision that learning disability charities, such as Mencap, hope will be overturned in time for the London 2012 Paralympics.
That takes a special kind of class.
