Why are there so many shootings in America?

I started reading this over at the UK Telegraph’s Speakers’ Corner. It’s too long so I picked out a few from the first few pages I got through.
America is a young, arrogant society completely lacking in history and culture. Europe has plenty of culture, is modest, and has a wonderfully long and peaceful history.

In all seriousness, I trust an armed American civilian population over an armed European government.

Now why does this happen "so much" in America? Easy. Schools and malls with "no guns allowed" policies are ripe targets. Police stations, gun shows, and military bases don't see mass shootings. Neither do states like Alaska and Vermont, where citizens are allowed to carry weapons concealed or otherwise without any permit or oversight.

I despair when I read the view that the victims here are the problem - soft unarmed targets who, by implication, had better get armed quickly. What sort of sick society have you guys got? I have travelled all over Australia (an area much the same as the US) without any need to be armed. Similarly I've travelled in Europe in safety. It seems armed Americans are their own worst enemies.

This question is so silly.
The reason there are so many shootings is because there are so many guns, and a bizarre "gun culture" in America.
I know. I grew up in the UK, and I've lived in the USA 10 years now.
A country that bans nipples but allows guns is, basically, seriously mentally ill.

The problem is that people don't have enough guns. If ordinary people carried guns more often, then this psychotic killer would have been gunned down by one of his victimes before he squeezed off the first the third or fourth bullet. In America gun use by ordinary, law-abiding people is discouraged, but psychos and thugs are not prevented from having guns. You'll never get rid of guns (unless you have an Orwellian State) so the sensible thing is to encourage ordinary people to pack them.

Maybe the common folk like to emulate their president and anyway, it's a lot easier to kill 30 people with a gun than with a knife, in more ways than one.

Talk about ammendments all you will, talk about law and all that bolox. But listen to the words of a 21 yold boy who has had those thoughts cross his mind before. The problem runs far far deeper than what we are allowed to do. It is about what we WANT to do. They are not monsters. They are people such a me and you who are pushed so far that they explode. literally. Im not justifying I'm trying to explain. These people who keep performing these massacres are social outcasts ful of rage. Teach your kids (and yourselves for that matter) to stop casting them out.

Peace x

So what are your thoughts on the tragedy that claimed so many young and promising lives and shattered many others at this University? May they rest in peace, our thoughts and prayers are with their families.
