A good end & A promising beginning

Back in October 2006, I posted in I think it’s a good idea, about allowing a flag burner from Sydney to carry the flag at the ANZAC day march, if he was truly remorseful and had changed his ways. At the time many were angry at this and the Returned & Services League (RSL) eventually backed down and just asked him to attend a dawn service.

In some ways I think it was a good thing that many were angry and let their feeling be well known, it sent the message that we are not a soft touch and you cannot just weasel your way out of doing the wrong thing.

Well it looks like the fellow has earned our forgiveness and now deserves our well wishes. I have a feeling we have one less Australian amongst us to be wary of, one who in all likelihood will join the rest of us in getting a job, paying a bit of tax and making a positive contribution to society.
THE Kokoda leadership trek that repentant flag burner Ali Ammar is today walking was developed by a Vietnam veteran. It aims to teach them the significance of the sacrifices made by our Diggers, the values for which they fought and died, and how they can apply these lessons back in Australia.

Ammar is taking on the 110km trek through dense Papua New Guinea jungle after critics said he could never learn the values of the flag he so infamously desecrated. Mr Ammar, 18, has embraced the walk and trained every day over the past few months so he can do it justice.
Good for you son, welcome to the real world, now if some of your fellow teenagers could learn from your example then those soldiers from the old days who died for that flag can rest easy.
